Technology as a Force for Good: Pragmatiq's Approach to Aligning AI with Sustainable Development Goals

The UN's 17 SDGs represent humanity's most ambitious roadmap. Here's how we've structured every product and partnership to directly accelerate SDG 2, 3, 4, and 9.

Key Takeaways

  • Pragmatiq's entire product portfolio maps explicitly to SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), 3 (Good Health), 4 (Quality Education), and 9 (Industry & Innovation)
  • SDG alignment is a product design constraint, not a CSR afterthought
  • Impact measurement framework tracks 14 leading and lagging indicators across all four SDGs
  • Annual SDG Impact Report published independently audited by KPMG

Why SDGs Are a Business Strategy, Not Just a Mission Statement

The Sustainable Development Goals are often framed as a moral obligation — the international community's commitment to a better world by 2035. At Pragmatiq, we frame them differently: they are the largest market opportunity in human history.

SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) targets a world where everyone has access to quality healthcare. The gap between that target and current reality — 4.5 billion people with inadequate access to essential health services — represents an enormous unmet need. Technology companies that can serve this market at scale, sustainably and profitably, are not doing charity. They are building businesses in the most durable markets on earth.

This framing changes everything. When SDG alignment is a CSR afterthought, it produces annual reports with carefully chosen metrics and little operational impact. When it is a business strategy, it becomes a product design constraint: every feature, every pricing decision, every partnership is evaluated against whether it accelerates or retards our SDG objectives.

SDG 2: Zero Hunger — LAND LORDZ and AgroSense

SDG 2 targets the elimination of hunger and the promotion of sustainable agriculture. India loses an estimated 16% of its crop production annually to preventable post-harvest losses, pest damage, and poor irrigation management — enough food to feed 200 million people.

LAND LORDZ directly addresses this through precision agriculture intelligence that reduces input waste, improves yield predictability, and enables smallholder farmers to access the same quality of agronomic advice as industrial agribusinesses. Our impact model estimates that achieving full deployment across India's 150 million smallholder farms would prevent losses equivalent to feeding 45 million people annually.

AgroSense's soil intelligence network also contributes to SDG 15 (Life on Land) by providing data that informs sustainable land management practices, reducing chemical runoff, and monitoring soil carbon sequestration.

SDG 3: Good Health — ClinAlly and the CDSS Platform

SDG 3's target of universal health coverage is the organising principle of our healthcare AI division. ClinAlly is explicitly designed to multiply the effective capacity of India's overburdened health system — not to replace clinicians, but to give each clinician the cognitive augmentation to care for more patients, more accurately.

We measure our SDG 3 contribution through a composite index that tracks: patient outcomes in ClinAlly-deployed facilities (diagnostic accuracy, treatment adherence, 30-day readmission rates); geographic reach (proportion of deployments in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities and district hospitals, not just urban tertiary centres); and equity metrics (proportion of patients from economically weaker sections served by the platform).

As of our 2024 impact audit, 61% of ClinAlly deployments are in non-metro facilities. This is a deliberate strategic choice — and it is harder, because rural and semi-urban hospitals have weaker infrastructure, less digitised records, and fewer resources for technology adoption. But it is where the impact is greatest, and it is where we choose to focus.

SDG 4 and 9: Quality Education and Industry Innovation

PurpleGene® is our primary contribution to SDG 4 (Quality Education). The platform's focus on foundational literacy and numeracy in government schools — the segment most underserved by the EdTech industry — directly targets the most consequential educational inequality in India.

SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) is perhaps our most broadly applicable mandate. The Micro-GCC model democratises access to engineering talent that builds innovative products. PALS creates the AI-literate workforce that industry needs. Our open-source contributions to the Indian AI ecosystem — including our multilingual NLP model library, released under MIT licence in 2023 — lower the barrier to AI innovation for startups and researchers across South Asia.

The measure of our SDG 9 contribution is not the number of patents we hold or the awards we receive. It is whether the organisations and individuals we work with are measurably more capable of building and deploying transformative technology than they were before they worked with us.

The Honesty of Impact Measurement

We publish an annual SDG Impact Report, independently audited by KPMG. We do this not because it is a marketing exercise — though it has that benefit — but because it holds us accountable to outcomes rather than activities.

The 2024 report revealed that our SDG 3 contribution in rural deployments was growing more slowly than our internal targets, despite strong urban performance. This was uncomfortable data. It led to a redesign of our ClinAlly deployment support model, adding dedicated change management consultants to rural hospital onboarding.

Impact measurement is only valuable if you are willing to act on findings that are unflattering. The organisations that will drive meaningful progress on the SDGs are not those with the most ambitious mission statements — they are those with the most rigorous feedback loops between their intentions and their outcomes.
